Mission

Hodgson Observatory strives to share the joy of discovering the Universe with the general public. In collaboration with the members of the Sioux Empire Astronomy Club, we share our telescopes – some of the largest in South Dakota – and our astronomical knowledge with inquiring minds of all ages. We are located in rural Beresford, South Dakota, and serve people in southeastern South Dakota and adjacent states.

Don’t stumble around in the dark. Get connected with the Big Picture, the real Universe out there by attending our “New Moon Saturday” evening meetings – usually the Saturday closest to New Moon when the sky is darkest. E-mail us for details.

The highlight of the year is the annual South Dakota Star Party near New Moon in late August or early September. In 2009, it will be held from Friday, August 21 to Sunday morning, August 23. E-mail us for more information.

We also conduct day and evening programs for school or other groups  in spring and fall. Some equipment is also available for student research projects. Interested teachers or leaders should e-mail us for details.
